Chapter 17

Flynn went straight to Mabel’s house, cleared her dining room table, and laid all the stuff from the planning office on it. Mabel came from the kitchen with two teacups in hand to find Flynn had taken over her table and was just about to tape stuff to the glass on her patio doors.

‘Flynn!’ she barked. ‘Stop it! I’ve just cleaned those.’

Flynn huffed, but placed the documents back on the table and rubbed at the offending marks with the sleeve of his tweed jacket, which to be honest just made the smudges worse. At a black look from Mabel he remembered to thank her for the cup of tea and invited her to join him looking over the plans.

‘Right, so what have you got here, Flynn?’ said Mabel, appearing slightly mollified.

‘There’s a proposed development on the edge of town for six new dwellings, with the land purchased by Blacknote Developments from the owners of six houses. He plans to build on their back gardens, one dwelling on each plot.’

‘What sort of dwellings?’

‘Well originally they were five bedroomed detached houses.’

‘Originally?’ asked Mabel.

‘Yes, but that scheme got turned down, deemed as too high density for the area.’

‘And now?’

‘Now Blacknote want to build six three-bedroomed bungalows, all high spec, each sitting in approximately quarter of an acre. He’s also proposing to build a new access road, so the bungalows face away from the houses and the two back gardens meet.’

‘That sounds better. Less obtrusive. But very expensive. Anybody would think we lived on Sandbanks,’ said Mabel with a snort of derision. ‘This is Muddlebay for goodness sake. If you ask me, some people, such as Black, have ideas above their station.’

‘It’s called gentrifying, Mabel.’

‘Well I wish they’d leave us well alone. We don’t need any of that nonsense here.’

‘You need to move with the times.’

‘No I don’t and that’s all there is to it. Nothing ever happens in Muddlebay and that’s just the way we like it,’ a disgruntled Mabel folded her arms across her chest. ‘When’s the hearing?’

‘That’s the thing, Mabel, it’s in two night’s time.’
